Every video game system comes with a unique, complete controller. This controller quickly becomes an icon of the console. Be it the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii, each has a distinctive controller that dictates how the games can be played. Indeed, this game play interactivity is one of the reasons that the Wii has been such a success.

However, the standard controller is very much a generic controller. You can happily control any game on your console using this controller but a better gaming experience can be found when you get something more specific. So flight simulator games can be controlled by a joystick and throttle. Real Time Strategy games are probably best controlled with a mouse. Shooter games are ideal with the standard controller. Sports simulators are also pretty good with the standard controller. Driving games are best with a steering wheel, peddles and gear shift. In terms of the Xbox 360 console the best controller for driving games is the Xbox 360 steering wheel.

There are many companies that specialize in designing controllers for video games. These third-party controllers are often endorsed by the parent companies who do not want to spend the time or money on researching and constructing their own specialized controllers; instead, they endorse these outside products for use with their games. Microsoft, however, refused to bring any other company into the mix, and built its own Xbox 360 steering wheel from the ground up.

The Xbox 360 steering wheel is wireless to the console. However the foot pedals are connected to the steering wheel via a wire. The steering wheel unit also has to be plugged into a wall socket so that you can get the rumble and feedback effects when you go through different terrain or crash.

In every other aspect, however, the Xbox 360 steering wheel makes your driving games that little bit more realistic. It costs around $100 new. This comes with with a copy of a video game complete with the set-up drivers necessary to make the peripheral work with your Xbox 360. You can get a used steering wheel for less on places like ebay.

The Xbox 360 steering wheel is made up of two components. The steering wheel/dashboard and the pedal set.

The pedal set is the accelerator and brakes. comes comprised of two many pieces: a steering wheel with a dashboard and a set of pedals, including a gas pedal and a brake pedal. The controller itself is sleek, and comes complete with water-resistant rubberized grips on both the wheel and the pedals. The wheel is eight inches in diameter and has a 240-degree turning radius.

It also includes all of the necessary buttons on the normal Xbox 360 controller needed to navigate menus and perform in-game functions not related to driving.

The rumble pack allows the user to experience realistic driving; if he or she drives over sand or crashes into a wall, the wheel shakes. Feedback and resistance is also accurately replicated; the wheel becomes harder to turn in skids or at high speeds.

Microsoft intends to keep the Xbox 360 steering wheel in mind with all new racing simulation games released so that the wheel stays compatible. Thus it will last for the life of your Xbox 360, making the initial financial investment a smart choice. It is also ideal for Xbox Live so that you can challenge your friends with added realism.
